Ursula von der Leyen elected as EPP Spitzenkandidat
Despite strong gains
The centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) has chosen German politician Ursula von der Leyen as its lead candidate (Spitzenkandidat) in the upcoming European elections, despite strong gains by green and far-right parties.
Von der Leyen's pitch
Von der Leyen will argue that she is “the only available candidate who can win” and will focus on “Europe that protects”. She has pledged to strengthen the EU’s borders, while also investing in education and healthcare.
